Nonsan Strawberry Festival - April 10, 2009

Last Friday April 10, 2009, Joy, Jessica, & I took the kids to the local Strawberry Festival about 2 hours south of where we live in Nonsan South Korea. Since it was going to take 2 hours to get to Nonsan, we decided it was best if we left at around 9 am. We met up at our apartment and left right at 9 am on the dot. Kyla rode with Audrey and me, while Jessica and Joshua, rode with Joy and Adrianna. Between the map on the flyer and the map I had bought of Korea, I still managed to get lost twice before arriving at our final destination. Fortunately the side trips that I got us into didn't really put us off course too much as we arrived within 10 minutes of the two hours it was supposed to take us.

When we arrived at Nonsan, the first indication that we were near the festival were the Strawberry balloons hanging over the main stage of the Festival.

The day was very beautiful, the day began at around 70 degrees and ended up being very sunny and hot that day. As we walked around the festival we saw many different products that were being sold that were made out of the strawberries they picked. There were Strawberry jams, shake, wine (which Joy tasted and said was very different tasting), there were lots of crafts for the kids to do, and shows of traditional dancing, as well as showcasing the talents and hardwork of the local children.

Audrey hanging out with the strawberry lady...

We all just got to the festival and the girls wanted to pick their strawberries already, unfortunately the flyer lied and there weren't any strawberry fields that the kids could pick strawberries from, instead we had to buy from one of the local vendors. The girls were dissappointed, but what else can you do?

I just had to take this little guys picture...

A dress that was made to represent the strawberry this one is made for adult woman

This one is made for little girls

Audrey posing in front of the big strawberry

The amazing thing about this strawberry is that there are real strawberries stuck into this model to make a very interesting texture on the model.

You can see the green and strawberries they stuck on the big foam strawberry.

Another part of the festivals were shows put on the main stage and at the back field of the festival. While we ate our lunch we watched little girls, around the age of 7, dance on stage with their glittery outfits, it looked almost as if they were trying to do belly dancing, it was very cute and at the same time to provocative for little girls to be dancing about.

Audrey wants me to find an outfit like that..

Audrey liked watching the people performing on stage so much she couldn't help but dance along with them

Adrianna and Kyla joined along

Audrey, Kyla, & Adrianna posing under a big Strawberry thingie, they were so good together.

Since Audrey had seen one of the Korean girls have a strawberry face painting on the side of their cheek, Audrey has been bugging me to go and get her face painted. It would be at the end of the kiosk line that we finally found the place that was offering free face painting, and before I knew it she was seated in a chair getting her strawberry "tattoo".

She was so happy she got her "tattoo"

The festival also had a petting zoo that the kids could go and visit with. They had different animals showcased, from a regular dog, to a chinchilla. Audrey, Kyla, Adrianna, and Joshua all loved being able to touch the bunnies, chicks, and chinchilla's.  We couldn't get the kids away, we spent at least 10 minutes in the petting zoo area.

Another great thing about this festival was the amount of crafts and activities made available for little kids. Audrey loved making her little foam Strawberry man. Because of the language barrier, we both had to watch the teacher carefully and figure out what she was trying to tell us. I think she did a pretty good job for not being able to understand what the teacher was trying to tell her.

Audrey has also wanted to do this bungee jump thing they had at the festival, since she had seen one in Kentucky. I thought at that time she was too young and too small to try it out, but since she's gotten a bit bigger since she last saw the bungee jump, I decided it was okay to let her try this out this time, just to see if she thinks it was really fun and not scary at all. Boy, Audrey took on the bungee jump like a pro and love every minute of it! I couldn't get her down or make her stop, even after she's been jumping for a good 2 minutes already. After she got off, she wanted to try it again. I promised her that the next time we go to another festival and it's there she could do it again.

To end our visit at the festival we wanted to find the area where there would strawberry picking, after walking around the festival twice, and found that there was no fields that we could pick the strawberries from, we ended up buying the strawberries from one of the farms. The best deal was 8000 won approximately about $6.50 for almost one pound of strawberries. I now wished I would have bought more as the strawberries here in Korea are naturally sweeter than the ones I've had before. Brandon, Audrey, and I could eat a whole bunch of them at one time if we could.

We also watched some of the traditional Korean music and dance performance they had showing. It was interesting to watch and I wished I could understand some of what they were wailing. It was interesting to see the dancers and performers in their dancing robes. The festival was very interesting and fun aside from the sun beating down and that it became dusty.

I'm thinking the guy with the gun represents the hunter and the stuff on his back are his kill... the performance was loud and everyone who watched seemed very serious, so I'm not quiet sure if the performance was telling a story of a hero who died. I really need to find a Korean friend I could take everywhere and help translate. I would have stayed longer if I would have known the story behind the performance.

The trip home was rather interesting, since I couldn't find the expressway, I decided to go ahead and take the scenic route home, which was slower and took about 20 minutes longer. But taking the way home this way helped me become better oriented with the driving and roads in Korea. I have found a couple of ceramic places that I think I will visit soon. They have many ceramics and the design are simple, but there is something about them that I want to buy and take home. Another collections for the things that I would buy and collect from all the different places we've visited and lived in.

Easter Craft Get Together

On April 8, 2009 the girls, Jessica, Joy, Sa, & I , all got together for an Easter Craft get together. We bought egg decorating kits, as well as plastic eggs that the kids were able to color and decorate as they want. The kids were so excited and couldn't wait to begin the decorating their eggs. Jessica was kind enough to let us use her home as the main craft area and with the open area and lighting it was perfect place for the kids to do their crafts. The kids were able to sit in a small coffee table which was draped in Tinkerbell table cloth and arranged in the middle were the bowl of food coloring and each seat had a carton which they would place their finished decorated eggs in.

When the kids finished they also made paper bag bunnies. I thought I took some pictures but apparently I didn't. It took the adults to help the kids to color and cut out the bunny parts. The kids liked putting it together and ran around the house chasing each other's bunnies. We all spent the rest of the day just hanging out at Jessica's house, talking, while the kids played with each other. By the time it was time to go, all the kids were pouting and fighting against leaving. It was market day and I still needed to do other errands before certain places closed. Since the kids were going to see each other the next day anyways, they all finally relented with the fact they couldn't stay and play at Kyla's house any longer.
Needless to say once Audrey finally settled down at the end of the night, she barely made it past the movie previews before I found her passed out on the couch. So far I've been trying to do many different activities and going to different places to help Audrey get used to being in Korea and having a pleasant experience. Audrey still talks about our home in Kentucky and how she can't wait to get back home, but she now understands (somehow) that we are thousands of miles away and how it's not really possible to just drive back to Kentucky.

Playdate Part II - The Almost Sleepover

I've been kept busy from posting as often as the pictures are taken because of my studies. I am now playing catch up as we have done so many different things in the last couple of weeks since my last post.
As in my previous post, Audrey has made friends with Kyla and her little brother Joshua. The following pictures are their playdate and almost sleepover. I say almost because around midnight to 1 in the morning Jessica came over and picked the kids up. Audrey was pretty upset when she woke up to find her two friends had gone home. We made it up by telling her the one day soon she will spend the night over at her friends house for a sleepover. Audrey was really excited at the concept of being able to spend the night at her friends house and asked me from then on if she gets to sleepover at Kyla's house.
For now, I will post these pictures as they are just freshly uploaded and before I completely forget or run out of time again.

Playdate

We had a play date with Audrey's friends, Kayla, Joshua, & Jasmine a couple of weeks ago at our apartment. The main intent was to do St. Patricks day arts and crafts, for the upcoming St. Patricks day. However, we all got sidetracked as the kids started playing with Audrey's newly arrived toys. The kids has such a great time playing with the tea set, dressing up, and playing with all the other toys.

Audrey has a ballerina outfit that Jane (Brandon's mom) bought for Audrey. The outfit lights up and when the lights stopped working, Audrey begged Jane to buy another one. Which of course Jane did, (even though I told her it was okay). We bought fairy wing at Wal-mart back in Kentucky and while we were in California a souvenir fairy wing from the fairy tale land in Legoland.

Jessica, Sa, and I, as well as a couple of the moms from the playgroup, are planning on another play date on April 8, 2009. This play date is going to be our Easter crafts time. The kids will be painting easter eggs and decorating plastic eggs with stickers and glitter. I hope to post the pictures up for our get together that evening or maybe that weekend.
I am really looking forward to the get together and hope that all goes well.

Lily's First Bath

We've recently got a puppy from one of a American guy who is teaching in Korea. (See the post titled "Lily").

I've waited about 4 days after her first Vet appointment to give her first bath. I knew that the Vet was already a traumatic event as they gave her first shot and microchip. Giving her a bath shortly after seemed like torture. So instead I waited, someone has told me that I should wait at least a week. But when I asked the Vet about it, she didn't seem think that it should be a problem if I try to give her a bath sooner.

Our 1.7kg (2 lbs) puppy was really sad looking when all that fur was wet and matted down. Our poor pup resembled a very hairy chihuahua. A very miserable looking hairy chihuahua. Needless to say I had to post pictures up to show how our very adorable little friend is all fur.

Spring Showcase Preview

So for the last couple of days the weather here has been surprisingly warm. Aside from the occasional windy afternoons, the day has been...beautiful. The couple that owns the apartment building we are renting has their own place right across the parking lot. The yard is meticulously kept by both the husband and wife. Since the weather has been warming the couple has been busy planting and getting ready for the coming spring.

The area where I take Lily out back has two small trees, both blooming with beautiful colored flowers. One looks like it's cherry blossoms and the other...well I'm not exactly sure what kind of plant it is, but it's so beautiful.

So it's really no surprise that I can't wait until next week when Brandon, Audrey, and I visit the Jinhae Gunhang Festival. (http://eng.jinhae.go.kr/02/03.asp) I have been really bugging Brandon about going to the local festivals, especially the local Cherry Blossoms as I have always been fascinated by these beautiful flowers and is now in the area where there is an abundance of them. Plus you can't beat the festivities that will go on around the local village that showcases these once a year natures gift.

This country has so many different festivals going on year round, especially during Spring, and I plan on taking (or dragging for Brandon's case) advantage of the learning the Korean culture as we may not have that opportunity again.

Since we left Kentucky, I have been feeling a little sad for leaving Halo behind. I have found a website called the Animal Rescue Korea (ARK). ARK is a network of people from all over the S. Korean peninsula, who out of their good heart, picks up stray dogs and care for them. Fostering the animals until they have found a good home. ARK is also another network site for animal shelters located in S.Korea. The forum is maintained by Karen and her colleagues. It is the main source of information for upcoming charities to help foster homes raise funds, recruit new volunteers, and for those seeking a pet to adopt, a place to find a forever furry pal.

ARK does not limit itself to just finding homes for dogs or cats, it has a place to post adoption notices for birds, hamster, gerbil, rabbit, or so on. There is so many pets out there needing a home and this website helps bring one of the furry animals a forever home. I was reading through some of the stories about the different dogs that needed to find a home that I ran across the "Three Amigos" thread. I was finally able to talk Brandon into agreeing to help find one of the puppies a home.

It would be another 3 1/2 weeks before we would be able to bring our newest family addition back home. When we first saw her, she was just such a big furball. As we separated Lily from her brother and sister, she fell silent, and just looked so sad. Audrey held her as she petted Lily on the head. I didn't think Brandon would take to the puppy as well as he did.

Lily is doing well with potty training, though we still have a couple of accidents. Lily still manages to keep most of the accidents in the front area where it is easy to clean up. Lily also found a couple of good places she likes to nap in. When she's outside in the living room with Audrey, she loves sleeping and napping on the couch. When she is in the office with Brandon and me, Lily loves to sleep either by my feet or under Brandon's desk. At night she sleeps at the foot of the bed.

Today, 03 March 2009, two bus loads of parent(s) and children headed out of the parking lot heading to the Gwacheon National Science Museum in Seoul. About an hour and fifteen minutes later we were walking through the massive halls of the museum. Our first destination was the Children's Hall, where children below the age of 7 could enjoy the museum's display. Because the Children's Hall was designed in mind to have little kids running around, Audrey and her friends were able to play with most of the Hands-on exhibits. The Children's Hall featured 35 themes of Hands-on exhibits.

Learning about the pump and how it gets the water up the tube.

Audrey played with the waterworks exhibit, where she learned how a simple turning could move the water wheel, how water goes up the tube when you pump the lever, and how water moves around when you open and close a path in a make shift water dam. Audrey also played with a bicycle where the output lighted the globe, and how recycling could help save the country save money and resources. Audrey also loved playing with the projected koi pond, where when Audrey steps at a certain area, the fishes moves away. So as she chases the fishes, the fishes swims away.

There was also a lopsided house, where the girls (Kyla and Audrey) loved to slide and roll down. They had so much fun, they kept giggling and saying "again!"

There was also a very interesting exhibit where Audrey was able to see the mechanism behind the roller coaster and the free fall attraction at the major amusement parks.

There were also many other different exhibits that Audrey enjoyed, one of the coolest one she liked very much was the exposure table, where you put a shape onto the table and when the light flashes several times it takes a negative "picture." We played around with the shapes and experimented with our hands.

After we visited the Children's Hall, our group moved to the 2nd floor visiting the Advanced Science and Technology Hall, Natural History Hall, and Korean Tradiontal Science Hall.

The advanced Science and Technology hall featured Aeronautics: airplanes simulators, the concept of drag, the way air travels around the wings, a simulator which engaged kids to try to steer the plane against a head wind, space shuttle (where the kids could walk into an actual space shuttle and see where astronauts work, sleep, and stay), and technological advances such as chameleon fabrics and built in MP3 player in coats.

The Independence Hall of Korea

The Independence Hall of Korea

On February 14, 2009, Brandon, Audrey, and I ventured to the nearest museum; which according to the tourist map was the Independence Hall of Korea. The Independence Hall of Korea is located approximately 45 minutes from where we live, in Cheonan. There are many different modes of transportation that one could take in order to get to the Independence Hall, (as with many other tourist and interest sites in the peninsula). We could have taken the subway, express bus, intercity bus, or like what we did, drive.

For less than $10.00 (paid for toll fare and parking fee), we were able to walk around the different parts of the museum. Which is a whole day visit because there are so many different parts of the museum.

The Map of the Independence Hall

Brandon, Audrey, and I were only able to visit the one of the exhibitions out of the seven total that the Independence Hall had. However, we were able to visit the Exhibition of Japanese Government - General Building Remains, The Reunification Monument, The Plaza of Nation, The Monument to the Nation and the Grand Hall of Nation.

The first thing that you would see when entering the Independence Hall is the Monument to the Nation. Which is featured as the top picture of this blog. The Monument is gated by Totem poles and starburst sculpture (as seen below). There are many greenery and trees all around the main entrance and I believe that should we visit in the Spring time we shall see a beautiful display of colors, flowers, and be visited by birds of all sorts.

The smiling Totem Poles

The Starburst Sculpture (the towers peeking through the top is the Monument of the Nation)

Another picture of the monument

After entering the main entrance, we came upon stairs leading to what looked to be scenic and tranquil looking path. Looking at the map, we found it led to the Reunification Monument. The Reunification Monument features the Bell of Unification, which is about 2.9 meters (9.51 feet) tall and about 8.6 tons. The bell is supposed to rings out the Korean people's desire for peaceful unification. At the site, there is of course information tablets which gives more information on the Reunification Monument and the Unification Bell.

The Unification Bell, etched on the bell are beautiful artwork representing the land and the peninsula of Korea.

A more detailed and close up look of the craftsmanship of the bell. The Dragons hold the top of the bell above the clouds and earth.

Just a shot of the stairs leading to the Reunification Monument. (There is more leading down towards the right top corner of the picture....)

Audrey in front of the stairs to the Reunification Monument.

These bricks were all over the walls that surround the outer area of the Reunification Monument. When you walk on the walkway you will see them against the walls. I'm not quiet sure what they say, but some of the bricks had logos of local companies and different pictures of flowers and so on. I'm guessing it is the wishes of the Korean Nationals for a peaceful resolution in the near future. Some of the bricks are sticking out giving the wall a very interesting texture.

While we were searching for the bathroom facility, we stumbled
across the Exhibition of Japanese Government - General Building Remains. In which we found it quiet perplexing because we could not imagine how the whole General Building would have been erected before it was destroyed. As in the pictures, the setup looked to be a set up where the center of the building was underground and the main building is what collapsed (or destroyed) where we now stand. It would have helped had the information tablet had an architectural drawing of the layout of the building or a picture of what it would have looked like. Since it was the building which housed the very culture to which imprisoned their country. It's very interesting to be walking through these exhibitions and learn more about the country to which we are living in. It's very interesting to learn about the different ways the country had lived and the different difficulties they had faced.

This is the background to the ruins.

The steps leading to the Japanese building ruins. This looked to be the main gate and wall that bordered the building before it was destroyed.

This must have been part of the courtyard before it was destroyed.

This is another view of the "courtyard" in the above picture.

The next area we visited was the Grand Hall of the Nation which is housed in a very big building which showcased an enormous statue called the Statue of Indomitable Koreans. The statue is said to be made of 274 stones and only weigh between 3-4 tons. Standing at the bottom of the statue one would argue that the statue would be more than 3-4 tons, but rather 34 tons! The statue is said to symbolize "the perseverance and indomitable spirit of Koreans who have maintained their 5,000 year history." (Another Memorial in Asian History: Independence Hall of Korea brochure/map) The open building which houses the statue overlooks a very big and open courtyard. In the courtyard leading to the Grand Hall of the Nation, there are Korean Flags flying proudly on both sides of the wide walkway.

This is the Grand Hall of the Nation. It is only a side view from across the street. You can just imagine how big the building is up close.

The last exhibition we visited was the 7th Exhibition Hall: The Korean Provisional Government. The exhibition featured exhibition of the Korean's journey to freedom, the road to establishment, action, ordeal, reunion, upheaval, and Road to Reunification. The exhibition hall featured wax figures of what the daily life had been for Koreans during the Japanese rule, their journey to freedom, and even featured figures of what looked to be their final defiance against the Japanese government. The exhibit was very interesting and it has showed me the injustices other people face who were not so lucky as I to be living in a country with which I enjoy so many freedoms. Though I know that during the times which the wax figurines depicts is of long ago, for those who has lived during those times, it was something they would not forget or should forget. Their history should be passed down to the generations after generations of Koreans which reminds them of their history and the road the country has taken to freedom and hopefully reunification as one country.

Another part of the Independence Hall that is not shown on the map is the models and exhibitions which shows the different types of tortures techniques and devices the Japanese used on the Korean freedom fighters. The exhibitions is rather gruesome, and some of the torture device are displayed where children could play with. Children should really be discouraged from playing with the devices or even seeing the display, but I guess learning about the past is what the main focus of this hall.

Bowling

Blossom
For Sunday Activity, I took Audrey to Bowling on post. Since my husband was out working, both Audrey and I have been feeling stuck in the house walking around with nothing really to do. The whole weekend was not uneventful, however, for some reason with just Audrey and I the extent of our do togethers consist of shopping. Not that anything is wrong with that except, I tend to be a habitual stress shopper.

Heard of people who stress eat? Well I'm a stress shopper. When I'm with my husband and daughter, I often reconsider the things that I would buy. Do I really need it? Why do I need to buy it now? Is it necessary that I buy it today or can I wait until it goes on sale? Questions like this often buzz around in my head as I walk around the store with the item in the cart. Towards the end of our trip, I end up putting the item back where I got it and leave with a lighter load.

However, when I stress shop, I tend to think about some of the questions that buzz in my head and completely ignore them. I end up buying more things than I really need and when I get home I ask myself what have I done. It's weird, whenever I'm apart from my husband, I get restless, I sleep later, and stress shop.

Instead of falling into the same trap, I decided to go online and see what the ongoings around my area. The first flyer that I downloaded was highlighting Kids and Bowling. I turned to Audrey and asked if she was interested in bowling, before I could tell her to get dressed and to put on her jacket she was already running to her room. I barely finished reading through the rest of the flyer when she came in dressed from head to toe. With a huge smile on her face she said "I'm ready!"

This was my cue, so after quickly changing, we were out the door heading to the Bowling Alley. We played one and three quarters of the game. Audrey loved bowling, she always jumped up and down when it was her turn and didn't want any assistance in rolling the ball. This made our game long and interesting for when she let go of the ball, I watched as it slowly inched its way to the pins. There were a couple of instances when the ball stopped in the middle of the lane and I had to get the assistance of the workers. After a couple times of moving the ball so that it would go down the lane, the worker gave Audrey a contraption that basically helped roll the ball down the lane faster.

Audrey used the gadget for a couple of frames, however, I felt as though she was being cheated on learning how to bowl. So I took the gadget back to the workers and patiently helped Audrey roll the ball down the lane. Being such a big girl, Audrey made such a fuss about being helped, especially when she watched the kids on the lane next to us roll their bowling balls on their own. I caught her several times running with the bowling ball and releasing it before I could help her. It gave her such pleasure to be able to be sneaky and do things on her own.

Towards the end of the second game, Audrey became less interested and almost bored to a point. Instead of making her finish the frame, I decided it was time to go and just pay for the game. As a reward Audrey wanted a push pop, why she would want something cold on a cold day, I don't know. I guess it's just what kids want and since she has been so good this weekend and during the game, I went ahead and bought her the push pop.

After bowling we went into the shopping district right outside post and walked around. After visiting the local bakery (and buying delicious pastries...which I do not need, but bought anyways) we headed back home. The rest of the day wasn't so bad either. Audrey and I played with her Barbie Electric Guitar and pretended we were rockstars. We had a very delicious dinner and watched Horton Hears a Who. At the end of the movie Audrey played a little bit of Noggin and got ready for bed.

I'm not sure what we'll be doing tomorrow, I may visit the playground down the street from where we live. The playground looked clean and it seemed that they had just built it. Only a closer and better look will tell me if it's just the illusion it's new.
